tlynnette asked: love Love LOVE your tumblr! <3 wanted to ask you, as a leader of the libertarian movement among young adults, is there any particular thing (or collection of things) that seems to click w/young adults so they finally go "ah-HA! NOW I get it!", or it is completely subjective?
Well, a “leader” might be an exaggeration, but I can’t say I mind the designation :)
But to answer your question, I think it really depends on the person and their individual political background (or lack thereof, as the case may be). For me, the progression was understanding the problems with government interference with the economy to realizing that it wasn’t the government’s business to legislate against vices (as opposed to crimes), to comprehending that aggressive war is just another big, immoral government program. As you might have figured out by now, I came to libertarianism from a fairly conservative position.
But then, I also have friends who came in on the war issue from a decidedly left-wing viewpoint and then gradually applied the philosophy of freedom to everything else. So yeah, it varies from person to person.
I guess if I were forced to generalize about young people, however, the concept of just leaving everyone else alone and minding one’s own business tends to make sense to us…and that’s usually a great place to begin.
